This was a great opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the hard work and dedication of these students. Class Reps play a very important role in the work of the Students' Union and underpin its success in actively representing all the students of the Institute. They are also pivotal in ensuring students in their class feel a sense of belongingness and they are key to fostering a culture of inclusivity for our diverse student population.

The Students’ Union Sabbatical Officers, Aaron Buckley, Aisling O’Mahony and Cian O’Driscoll announced that the six Class Reps to be awarded in recognition of their ‘Outstanding Voluntary Contribution’ were:

Jack Ahern, DCE, Year 2

Kyle Byrne, Elecronic Engineering, Year 3

Oisin Gahan, Recreation and Leisure, Year 2

Colm Healy, Social Care, Year 3

Isobel Kavanagh, International Business, Year 2

Shannon White, Marketing, Year 4

Colm Healy was also awarded the prestigious Cork Institute of Technology’s Presidential Citation. The voluntary work Colm has done with charitable causes, the support he has given to enhance students’ well-being and his contributions to the external community were taken into consideration when identifying him as a deserving recipient of this citation.  We look forward to presenting the physical awards in the near future.

Sincerest thanks to Aoife Kelliher, Societies Officer, for her generous support throughout the process – we couldn’t have done it without her.

  • Sitting on course boards
  • Liaising with academic staff
  • Attending NStEP & Sparq at CIT events/activities
  • Information dissemination
  • Organisation of class events and hoodies

The Union Council Awards Ceremony recognises the contribution of Class Reps to the Students’ Union and to the Institute as a whole. At this ceremony all active Class Reps are presented with a Certificate of Merit recognising their voluntary contribution to Students’ Union activities which is endorsed by the Institute’s Registrar & Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Students’ Union President.  This Certificate is an honour to recieve and employers are interested in potential employee's voluntary activities - the Certificate is evidence of this.

A number of awards recognisig 'outstanding voluntary contributions' are also presented at the ceremony. Class Reps are nominated for these awards by their classmates – it takes just a few minutes to nominmate a Class Rep and it offers the perfect opportunity to thank them.

A CIT 'Presidential Citation’ is also awarded at the ceremony. The Presidential Citation is awarded to a student for "exceptional and outstanding service to the Students’ Union at Cork Institute of Technology.  Through their participation in a number of projects and fundraising events, this person has demonstrated a civic responsibility and has actively contributed to the enhancement and quality of the student experience".
